Such was the first conscious thought that flitted through Hope Estheim's mind, as one turquoise eye cracked open, the iris and pupil rolling from side to side behind light eyelashes.
...?
The next move to come would be a slight shift, as he propped himself up on one hand - since when had he been laying down? - blinking hazily as he tried to make sense of the things he was seeing.
This isn't Academia.
He began with the facts, ignoring the dull throb of pain stemming from the side of his head. Rotating one shoulder and releasing a sigh upon hearing it crack into place, he stood slowly, using the (stone) wall behind him for support as his stiff muscles creaked.
Stone, not metal. A sandy tan color that, while in shadow, was obviously not even close to the white polyplastic and shining chrome that Academia was built upon. He drew his first conclusion from this fact.
I am not in Academia. But if so, where am I?
Shaking his head, tossing silvery hair askew and clearing his vision at the cost of further exacerbating the pain above his right ear, Hope took another look about his person. An alley...? The crate to his left, seemingly filled with scraps of fabric, justified the conjecture - and so did the fact that, were he to stretch his arm out straight, his fingers would just brush a wall in front of him.
To the left, the alley extended another six or so feet until it ended in another wall. To his right, it opened onto what seemed to be a side street of some sort, seeing as he judged an average of one person walking past every two and two-thirds seconds.
And above? Above - he glanced upward, and what he saw - was an honest-to-goodness airship. An airship. Two glowing rings were visible on its underside, one to the fore and the other to the aft, and they spun as the archaic-appearing hunk of metal clipped through the air. It was not the airship's appearance itself that surprised him, but the rings - Cocoon had not had any sort of similar technology, much less the Academy.
Where am I? Florinda had gotten fairly used to this world quite rapidly. It must be her adventurer's blood. Sure, she could probably have been like her parents and be a scientist, but she had the want to explore as well. She must've developed it over the years. Besides, her scientific mind came to machines, how they worked, parts, and the like.
Despite not knowing where she was and if anyone was still alive, including the Nedian android she was investigating, she knew she had to press on. When she wasn't with the anti-slavery group, she had to learn how to be a solo bounty hunter of sorts, in search of androids of course to De-commission them.
Basically, she classified as a bounty hunter, a thief, a bandit, or anything along those lines. She did them all. So she was making the best with what she got. Currently, she was running some odd jobs here and there as a bounty hunter. That's what she's going to be known for here.
She needed the money for either repairing the ship, if she ever found it, or purchasing a new one to begin some life anew thing. Even without her revenge or the anti-slavery group being around anymore, she was sure she could find meaning in this land somewhere - perhaps starting with learning the technology of this land.
It was unlike her, but she turned to look in an alleyway, for no real rhyme or reason, and caught a figure there and she stopped, having almost completely missed them. She backed up to stare into the alleyway. Parts of him was missing (she noted it was probably due to him wearing a form or red/yellow) but she could make out he was male and quite young.
That was the only judgement she was going to make, outside the fact the person seemed to look slightly disoriented. Florinda fixed her sunglasses, mostly to make sure they stayed on her face as she approached the smaller boy, looking down at him. "You look a bit confused. You okay?"
Her voice was level and neutral. After all, if there was one thing she learned as one of those above descriptions of her, it was that she should trust no one. Still, there was a question on her mind. "If you don't mind me asking, but have you seen a...android in somewhat fancy clothing?"
She would have normally not been as blunt, but she had recently come to a realization. She had a look over Nayru and if they crashed, which Florinda assumed they did despite being out during the actual crashing, she would but the most likely to survive, even if the ship exploded. So there may be someone out there that has seen her...

You okay?"
Jumping slightly - since when had there been anyone nearby? - Hope turned around on the heel of his stiff boot, having some difficulty in wiping the look of surprise off his face; instead of a placid smile spreading across his visage, instead he ended up looking as if he were just about to sneeze.
"Me?" he asked, somewhat rhetorically in hindsight, but he was more pleased that his voice hadn't wavered. Shaking himself a little (get yourself together!), the young man nodded in answer to the question, taking a moment to observe the individual standing before him.
Raven locks cascaded to behind the woman's shoulders, and she was clad in a fairly monochrome outfit. Large orange sunglasses were perched atop her small nose, and her aura - the woman had such a presence about her that it took him a few seconds to realize she was actually at eye level with his chin. That quality in and of itself reminded him just a touch of Lightning - and he would not expand on that thought mentally. He could already feel the soft twinge of loss in his breastbone, and that was only with a passing thought.
"Yes," he answered, interrupting himself. "Though, I suppose you could say I am... a little lost." Hope's smile was wry.
"If you don't mind me asking, but have you seen a...android in somewhat fancy clothing?"
Those sunglasses are disconcerting, he thought idly, before the question fully processed. Wh - an android? Now that was unexpected. Realizing belatedly that she was awaiting an answer (obviously), Hope this time shook his head 'no'.
"I haven't, unfortunately," he answered, but followed up with a question of his own. "May I ask where we are, and perhaps where you're from? If I'm not mistaken, from what I've seen of this city thus far, an android is rather above the average level of technology."
Is she from Cocoon or Pulse? The idea flitted across his mind, but he dismissed it immediately. Her style of clothing didn't match, and while artificial life-forms had been passably common in Academia... no. He could not explain it, but he knew she wasn't of his world.
"Oh! Excuse my rudeness - I don't think I've introduced myself." The silver-haired man held out one gloved hand. "Hope Estheim, at your service.
And yourself?" She may be slightly amused at the other's jumpiness. However, the amusement was hidden in her eyes, ones he could not see due to the lighting effect of the alley on her sunglasses. No doubt she must look slightly intimidating. However, it wasn't an option for her to take it off, for obvious reasons.
She gave a short nod, allowing the other to recover from her speaking. She had absolutely no idea why the other reacted so, but he must have his reasons. Still, she remained wary and alert. Despite her suspicions quickly leaving her that this boy was of any threat, she still had to rule out the innocence as either an act or not.
Those who feign innocence were the tricky ones to pick out. Lost, huh? Florinda took some time to test the sentence in her mind and replayed his voice. He wasn't lying. She could trust him - somewhat - in terms of him not meaning any harm to her - yet. There was always a trigger in someone that would set them off.
Florinda let a small frown slip at his nod. But at least he [i[knew
[/i] what she was talking about...she could tell from the primitive technology here that the very thought of an artificial intelligent being was out of the question. He followed up his nod with a verbal response, but also a question she wouldn't mind answering - somewhat. She also understood that Hope did not match any clothes she was used to. Even though she had experienced much traveling over her lifespan, his clothes were far too...advanced. Her clothes were much more casual and did not give away the level of technology she was used to, though the fact she knew what an android was gave it away. Hm. Florinda let a small smile slip on her lips, proving that she wasn't all bad. It may be hard to show a friendly attitude (despite her being actually friendly) with being in an alleyway and being complete strangers, but she would certainly try. However, she still was suspicious. She wouldn't be the one to make the first move. "This place is called Archades." She wanted to say more and give a more accurate description of what she knew about Archades, but she doubted he would understand her references if she talked about the level of technology this world had. "It's highly militarized, or was. It's currently missing it's emperor."These pieces of information was mostly for small talk. To show she wasn't a complete anti-social person, nor someone to be feared, despite how intimidating she could be. when he asked where she was from, she purposely skipped it. Instead, she found it highly curious that, despite being lost and not knowing where he was, he already guessed the level of technology the planet was under. That could mean one of two things. "You would be correct. They mostly concentrate on their technology of airships and their weapons are medieval, at best." Oh there slipped a term. Oh well. "Somewhat primitive." She corrected herself. Hope could guess she was from a highly advanced civilization, despite avoiding the 'where you from' question. She shifted her glasses up, the light now revealing her eyes, 'brown' in color, as they looked quite amused. "You remind me of people who claim to be engineers or, perhaps, a form of scientist." She said. Now, for that question she's been passing off. "You can say I'm not from around here."That was obvious. But her eyes seem to be a bit more amused, as if wondering 'if you don't tell me, why should I tell you?' There was a level of comfort that she was willing to express, but home planets, especially if they were warring ones (such as if Hope was from the Galactic Federation; that would cause problems for her). Since she was often wanted, not only when she was with the anti-slavery of androids group but when she was on her own, she had to make sure he was not on the side of the enemy. However, a slip of her name was fine for her, since she wasn't known by her name. She was just simply known as...The Sniper. For obvious reasons. She raised her own hand and shook his firmly. Florinda was always confident in everything she did. "Florinda Flores. It's nice to meet you, Hope." She didn't need fancy little tag-alongs. She was casual, despite her somewhat business and work attitude that makes her seem serious all the time. But her eyes betrayed her serious tone of voice, for being soft and gentle and always amused. She was taking the situation very seriously, and yet she was having a bit of fun herself. How was it possible? Simple. She finally had someone to talk to. The people here were suspicious enough. She finally found someone that she could talk to without worry. [/size][/blockquote][/blockquote] THANK YOU SO MUCH TASMANIAN OF CAUTION FOR MAKING THIS !

Post by Nayru CPE-vE1 on Oct 24, 2012 21:22:38 GMT -5
If there was one thing Nayru never understood, it was why humans seemed to find her so... alluring, if that was the word. She'd been enjoying herself too much in her walk through this primitive but grand city and seemed to have walked in to the more seedy part of town. And gotten herself surrounded by men with apparently poor hygiene and high intoxication levels, if her atmospheric scanners were functioning properly. Which, after a quick systems check, they were. This wasn't the first time this had happened, but last time her friend Florinda had been there to defuse the situation before someone did something that would earn them a hole burned through their skulls.
They did the typical routine of boasting and hitting on her before attempting to get violent. The first one to lunge at her received an iron fist in the gut. The man having been the biggest, the others seemed stunned that she had dispatched him so easily. The man fell over wheezing and coughing, and the others huddled around him without paying her any more mind. Violence was sometimes an acceptable answer, she had found. Nonetheless, the made a note to herself to pay more attention where she was going.
After some more walking back to where she'd come from, she saw the familiar form of Florinda hanging out of an alleyway. She felt a lightness in her AI that represented happiness and stepped up her pace a bit, stopping just short of her in such a way that allowed her soft silk dress to brush against her to indicate that she was there. Living things needed some kind of sensory input to know that something was there, she had learned, and it seemed that Florinda was busy speaking to someone else in the alleyway. She could see immediately that he was as out of place as she was with her crown of pale blue holograms .
"Uniform is not registered in my databases as a Federation uniform though the design is similar to some. Equipment analysis suggests scientific origin, further observation is currently only speculation." Nayru said, unintentionally speaking her readout aloud. She offered a quick bow and a nervous frown to the man in response... whoever he was. "I apologize; I sometimes speak without meaning to. I am Nayru, you have already introduced each other yes? Miss Florinda, I am pleased to see that you also survived our separation. I was examining the city; please forgive me for not seeking you out immediately." she said, giving another much deeper bow to the blind woman.
<This could be better but DEAL WITH IT>

"Militarized?" he parroted, not as a question but more the sound of cogs turning in his head. Puzzle pieces of terms found places in his mind. Emperor - empire - an expansionist mindset. A strengthened military most likely to improve its grasp over surrounding lands.
And, as she had said, the technology level to be seen in their transportation was not true of their weapons - medieval? That was a term he did not recognize. The scientist's head cocked to one side, posed to question its definition, before the woman offered an alternate description. An interesting term, that.
"You remind me of people who claim to be engineers or, perhaps, a form of scientist." Brown eyes glinted through tinted glasses, darker than the shade of the glasses themselves; grey eyes, then?
"I was about to say the same," Hope admitted, smiling. "Yes, it's an accurate statement to call me a scientist. Yourself? You seem to deduce more than the average person."
The challenge hidden in her statement was understandable. We're both skirting around the edges of the truth. Perhaps we have more in common than I expected.
However, he didn't rise to the bait, only nodding at her introduction. "And you, Florinda -"
"Uniform is not registered in my databases as a Federation uniform though the design is similar to some. Equipment analysis suggests scientific origin, further observation is currently only speculation."
The emotionless readout caught the young man off-guard, and he caught himself staring at the girl that had appeared next to Florinda - the android? It had to be; the youthful female visage was crowned by bright blue hologram displays, even as its - her - expression twisted into a frown. It - she - bowed to him, issuing an apology, before turning to address Florinda.
The silver-haired man was not sure what to say, and so he simply said nothing, only gazing in wonderment at the artificial life-form. I wonder... She allowed the gears to work in his mind; to interrupt a scientist from his mind would prove to have very negative results. She wondered if his terminology was off, or if they had other words depicting the same thing. She doubted that his level of technology he was used to was inferior to hers, yet may be even on the same level, even superior.
He must be a scientist, an analytical one to be frank. there were different kinds of scientists, one that would rather analyze machines rather than people, but he seemed observant on both accounts. "I am an engineer." The answer was simple enough; she dealt with mechanics. She wouldn't reveal she also had a background with science, but that was her mother and father's forte.
Just because she had the knowledge and the mindset of her parents didn't qualify her as a scientist. He didn't take her bait, which she found interesting. Normally, the mind of the scientist would be warped in a way that he would feel upmost confidence to state where he was from. He certainly was different and it truly intrigued her. Then she felt the brush of a skirt.
Florinda reminded herself that she needed to enhance her awareness skills. She had become too lax. Florinda turned as Nayru started her talk. Florinda couldn't help but feel relief in seeing the android had found her. Her navigational skills must be working, and the functions of her body must also be working too with a simple deduction.
However, unlike the other, who was mostly baffled with the android, she took great care into hearing the others words. "That's good knows, for once." She betrayed the hint of amusement in her voice. "Then I can safety say I'm from a planet called Earth." Florinda didn't mind dancing around, but if the opportunity presented itself, she would rather it be straightforward.
Florinda decided to ignore the currently baffled man in favor of Nayru, for now. She kept herself alert this time, so Hope wouldn't be able to do anything, despite her back being turned. So the android was curious...Florinda was aware of this, of course. She always found it so interesting what this android was capable of doing, human-wise or not. "We have. This is Hope, a scientist."
Florinda introduced, in a way, hoping the other would share his own place of origin. She had, after all, and it would not conflict with his own, assuming that he had no idea about her planet, and she did not either. "That's fine. So long as you're okay; I had doubted that anything would have destroyed anything external, but your internal AI and programming seem to be working properly."
Well, as much as it could be. Her power core still needed to be fixed, though Florinda was damned if she knew how to do that...she considered Hope briefly but she found a part of herself resisting the motion. Florinda was a bit over-protective of something she deemed as her charge. However, this wasn't a simple mechanic to subject that she worked on...
It was beyond that. Florinda took a better look at her as her arm shot out, gripping the android's arm and stared at it carefully. "Did you activate your combat AI, by any chance?" That betrayed a hint of worry and concerned; she had estimated that, without proper control, she could certainly wipe this entire area out.
She wondered if the combat AI was also functioning properly; she hadn't recalled an instance that she even had used it before, since Florinda was always there to intervene. With the combat AI possibly stimulated, she wondered if it would snowball from there. How could Florinda figure this out with a simple glance at the android? Florinda had a meticulous eye, being not only a scientist in heart but a mechanic, and knew almost every detail (though somewhat creepy if Nayru wasn't an android).
And she noticed that her hands appeared different, somehow. And Florinda only could assume it was combat, given her own experience to how her own hands would looked if she dispatched someone. Despite owning a lethal weapon, Florinda much preferred a non-lethal way of doing things if the chance arises that combat was necessary. She let go of the arm and finally turned her attention back to Hope.

Nayru was slightly surprised by Florinda grabbing her arms, though her face didn't show it. To be honest, she was more interested in the man's reaction and why he looked so awed. But then, she supposed that this was a normal response to an android of her level; everyone she'd met so far had reacted similarly. She blinked at the question she was given even though she didn't need to and nodded, an odd symbol appearing over her forehead.
"Affirmative. I wandered in to a less favorable part of town and a small altercation ensued. Combat module was active for exactly three point zero two seconds to disarm the largest. Onboard combat computer suggested targeting the leader should combat initiate, tactic was very useful. I may have swung too hard and damaged the sleeve of my dress," Nayru replied, nodding and withdrawing her arm from Florinda's grasp. Her AI brought back up the statements from before and she nodded again.
"I believe I am durable enough to survive shuttle crashes of that nature. My AI cores were undamaged as far as my internal readouts can tell." With that, she turned to Hope and smiled again. "It is pleasant to make your acquaintance, Hope. I hope that we will have only pleasant interactions while we are here, and I will attempt to avoid speaking out of turn where possible. Currently, I cannot guarantee that I will not vocalize my readouts due to a glitch in my artificial intelligence, though I may say something of use to you." Nayru said, giving a low and polite bow to the boy. It was unusual to see people so young with white hair like hers, though she didn't think to comment on it.
"Please, resume your conversation from before. I will try not to interrupt again."

He noted it was most likely rude that he had been staring at the android, but wasn't certain - what held to etiquette on this "Earth" that this Florinda had mentioned in regard to automated life-forms? Perhaps it was something he might be able to learn from the other woman.
And even that was much on the fringes of everything he wanted to ask of her. It wasn't often that one got the opportunity to converse with an engineer hailing from a civilization much further advanced than one's own.
However, he had to contain his curiosity until another, perhaps more appropriate time.
At the mention of himself, Hope inclined his head and smiled by way of greeting. Almost giddy with the prospect of maybe being able to ask this woman and the automaton some questions, he lapsed into thought, speculating on the level of technology necessary to duplicate the android.... if it were even possible.
"Hm?" he articulated, jolted out of his reverie by the android addressing him. Though he nodded at her statements. "Pleasant to make your acquaintance as well, Nayru," he responded, the name feeling unfamiliar in his mouth. "Thank you for the forewarning; you needn't worry about startling me, though. I've seen a few unusual things in my time." The quirk to his mouth was wry.
Offhandedly, he realized he had not met Florinda's factual tidbit with one of his own... however, as he thought, he realized he didn't know of a name with which to group together Gran Pulse and Cocoon. There was no name for the pair of them... something he found unusual in hindsight, but decided he could possibly blame the fal'Cie rule of Cocoon for. Doubtless any history of such a word had been destroyed; whatever way to set apart the citizens of Cocoon from those of Gran Pulse, the better.
So, instead, he felt inclined to expend a few more breaths on an explanation. It wasn't as if a description of his home would do any harm, after all. At least not more than what it's destined for, he thought suddenly. The ominous realization almost consumed him in guilt, for not being in Academia at the moment to continue his work on Bhunivelze; he consciously forced down the rising emotion, reassuring himself that hundreds of years had passed since the discovery of their worlds' fate, and a few days or so was little in the face of such a span.
Frowning and clearing his thoughts, he lapsed into an "explanation" state of mind. "Cocoon," he began, "myself, born and raised - however, I now reside on Gran Pulse. One could call me an... expatriate, if you will.
"Cocoon, on which I was born and raised, towers above the surface of Gran Pulse; a Dyson sphere continent, it was once held aloft by antigravitational levitation." Another twitch of a lip. "Nowadays, a great crystal pillar supports the construction. I live on the surface world below." Florinda's eyes narrowed slightly as the information was relayed on her. She briefly wondered if her navigational core had also been damaged, or if it had not mapped out the place and was glitched, like some other parts of her was. But she decided that it was a trivial matter she should not be focused on currently. At least her combat AI seemed to be functioning properly.
However, it did worry her. "Unless needed, please refrain from stimulating your combat AI, okay?" It was mostly out of worry that she stated it; she didn't need Nayru to somehow glitch before she knew that her combat AI was completely stable, which she didn't know. She didn't know what Nayru was truly capable of...
Florinda allowed her arm to slip from her hands. Since Florinda had finished her diagnosis, it wasn't needed. Florinda nodded. So in short, nothing had changed with the crash. Then again, Florinda herself had somehow survived the crash herself...then again, she was nowhere near the crash site from what she could tell; she had been here for a good couple of hours and there was absolutely no word of a crash.
So the chances of someone dragging her here was an illogical situation...perhaps the teleportation device they kept on the ship somehow activated and sent her here. Then again, Nayru had also been here...so it was entirely possible the crash happened nearby, but she was teleported here while Nayru simply walked. That sounded like the ideal situation given the facts.
Finally, with that out of the way, Florinda returned her attention to Hope and allowed Nayru to speak. She knew the reasoning to explain her...strange talk at times. Florinda was long used to it, but for someone with little to no experience with an android (she assumed, of course) and especially a malfunctioned one to an extent, even Nayru came up with the conclusion Hope would be sorely confused.
Despite Hope's affirmation of not being startled by her, Florinda held her doubts. Nayru could be...very startling. Even Florinda, upon first meeting her, was startled by the other, and Florinda had quite a nerve. It happens when you first seek out revenge and be hellbent on it so much that it consumed you. Now, revenge was not in her arsenal; Nayru would have been dispatched otherwise.
However, she briefly wondered what Hope had seen. He was a curious individual; he reminded her of herself in someways. A woman, or in his case a man, of science but taken away from their field and sought out combat. He could not lie to Florinda; she could tell he was trained in some form of combat. Certain reactions also made him seem like he was almost professionally trained.
Florinda was not, but she had been around government officials, as a spy or as a thief, long enough to pick up etiquettes that they left around. Florinda had done many things in her life, despite her young age. But all to survive this universe she had traversed in. Florinda had experienced much; maybe too much. But the damage was done.
Hope went on to explain his home of Cocoon. She tried to imagine it; two worlds seeming to merge together. But he moved from one world to the other. Florinda couldn't exactly be called an expatriate, given how she had no permanent home. Nor a temporary home...her home resided on that airship and not once had she ever really thought about it.
Once more, the damage she had dealt on herself and the situations she's been had caused her to lose that fundamental thought and it honestly frightened her. But for the sake of both persons, she would not reveal them. Being a bounty hunter seemed to have it's benefits; she was able to keep a mask and let no emotion go unchecked. It was uncanny, but needed.
"Interesting. I couldn't tell you what Earth looks like now. Haven't been there for quite some time." Florinda said, though hiding the fact she had suddenly felt incredibly homesick for the first time since she left Earth. "My want for knowledge of other technology drove me out quite some time ago. Just as your want for knowledge has done to you, yes?"
Florinda may have been wrong, but she had just made an assumption. She assumed that Hope had left for science. Florinda had lied through her teeth though. She did not often lie, but she kept her real reason for leaving hidden. No one needed to know...especially not Nayru. How would she react if her initial reason for leaving was to destroy the android that had destroyed her family?
...Her reaction to Florinda's revenge extending towards wanting to eradicate androids? Her reaction to joining the anti-slavery for androids was to in fact disassemble androids? Her whole reason of becoming an engineer was for that sole purpose? It was a reaction Florinda never wanted to see happen. Hope would take it far better, but for Nayru's sake...
She would lie.
THANK YOU SO MUCH TASMANIAN OF CAUTION FOR MAKING THIS !
